8/5/2009 The ASHE' Foundation

I wanted to share with you all some info about a particular cause that I am very passionate about, the ASHE' Foundation.

The ASHE' Foundation collects and distributes shoes, clothing, basic necessities, and services to aid the disadvantaged and underprivileged children of African nations. Below is a letter from the CEO, Dion Fearon, that is particularly touching. For more info please visit www.theashefoundation.org.

In March of 2008, I received an email that included the photo of a pair of feet wearing "plastic bottle flip flops". That image haunted me for months until finally I discussed with my mother my desire to make a difference. She encouraged me to start the non-profit organization that I had been thinking and talking about for years. I then pledged to myself to collect one (1) million pairs of shoes and distribute them to the underprivileged children and adults in Africa.

So with that, The ASHÉ Foundation was born. ASHÉ, also spelled "Ase", "Axe" or "Ache", is a Yoruba word which means "the power to make things happen". Depending on the context in which the word is used it also means,”the ability to make whatever statement you make come to pass or happen", "the ability to compel nature, animate or inanimate objects to bend to your will", "so be it", or "so it shall be".

I then spoke with several close friends and family members who immediately endorsed the idea and encouraged me to move forward. Therefore, I began networking my idea within the San Fernando Valley community. At that time, I had no idea how I was going to get those shoes to Africa. However, I began collecting shoes anyway. Immediately things began to fall into place. Close friends, Jorge and Mampye-Matlou Maciel, of the Kanimambo Foundation informed me that they knew just how to transport the shoes to Africa. Thus a partnership formed between the two non-profits to transport and distribute "Shoes to Africa". So began what I believe is my life's work.

The ASHÉ Foundation is dedicated to serving the needs of the underpriviledged of African nations. Our current goal is to collect one (1) million pairs of new and gently worn shoes and other items so that we can deliver them to those most in need throughout the African continent.

Astoundingly, there are 1.7 million orphans in South Africa alone, and 99.8% were orphaned by parents who have died from AIDS. Sadly, there are countlees other children whose parents are still alive but are not able to care for or feed them, let alone put shoes on their on feet.

We urge you to help our foundation put shoes on the feet of so many in need, especially the millions of children in Africa who suffer daily from the devastating effects caused by HIV/AIDS. In early January 2009 our first stop on our world-changing mission was South Africa and Maputo, Mozambique where we distributed 3500 pairs of shoes to a crowd of 7000. Needless to say it was not enough. We will be embarking on our second of many trips to Africa in August 2009 to distribute more shoes to orphaned children. In September 2010 will will travel to Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana to distribute shoes, soccer equipment, clothing, school supplies and medical supplises. These trips will ensure that the items we collect will be delivered to the intended recipients. With your help we will accomplish our goal and have a larger impact on the world.

Thank you.

1/27/2009 My Thoughts On Barack Obama's Inauguration

MY THOUGHTS ON BARACK OBAMA'S INAUGURATION - "I am so glad to be alive to witness this historic occasion. My mother is not here to bask in this moment, but was the one who instilled in me pride for being black in America. She would particularly be smiling about this victory, not just for a black man, but in the progressiveness of this country to see his ability to be effective as the president. Although racism still exists, I have not seen the racism that my mother saw...perhaps the discrimination that I did see, my son will never experience. This is a step toward people being judged by the content of their character - The bigger dream."

10/21/2008 Random Thoughts

Hey Everybody! I hope your checking out my Myspace page! I'm starting to perform club dates. I'm testing out the material and getting into show form so that I can do a more extensive tour at the top of the year. The election is real close. I want to encourage everyone to GO OUT AND VOTE! These are crucial times and America definitely needs a change. I'm also remembering Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops. What an incredible performer and singer! He will be greatly missed. Video is done ya'll! Coming soon so stay tuned!

9/19/2008 "One Week After Timeless Release"

Things are moving really fast but I didn't want another week to go by without reaching out to you! I'm about to film a video for "You Are My Starship" this week! I'm also using Say Now for the first time. Thanks for all of your comments, particularly Marcia from New York, Carol from Dallas (your looking for William Becton's "Broken") and Rashaan from Alaska. The reaction to the Timeless album has been overwhelming. I'm taking in all the comments to hopefully make myself better.

Some of you have been wondering who's working on my management team now. I recently have rejoined with Michael Mauldin (Jermaine Dupri's father). He was the president of Columbia Black Music when I released my first solo CD and now he is spearheading my solo career. It's great to be back with him...he's like my big brother. Unfortunately, for all those who were looking forward to Chante and I performing in London, we will be postponing those dates until early Spring, so keep checking out the sites for new dates. Love ya'll! We'll blog next week!

9/9/2008 hello

Hello everybody and welcome to my new website! It's been a really long time but I am excited to announce my new solo CD, "Timeless". I know that some of you are probably expecting an album of original songs, however, I chose to take a different approach and record eleven, sort of "unexpected" covers that I think are great songs. I hope that this approach gives the listener the feel of an original album, as most of you will not be familiar with all of the original songs anyways. The lead single is a cover of Norman Conners "You Are My Starship", which reminds me of growing up in Washington D.C., listening to that classic song on The Quiet Storm with Melvin Lindsey.

This CD also marks the beginning with my relationship with Verve Records. I feel like it's a really classy place to be and look forward to expanding my career there as well. Look out for tour dates and appearances in your area soon and look for more blogs from me!
